12 / Silver Linings Playbook / David O. Russell
It wasn't until after watching Silver Linings Playbook that I realised David O. Russell (the director) also directed I Heart Huckabees, which made a hell of a lot of sense, and explains why I liked it so much. I've never seen any of O. Russels other work (something I may have to change soon) but I feel like Silver Linings Playbook and I Heart Huckabees are two thematically similar films, they both portray fucked up people trying to come to terms with how fucked up they are, not shying away from it or trying to hide it away, but embracing it head on and accepting themselves for what they are. As a message to portray in a film, I think that's a pretty damn good one. It helps that the film is extremely well made, beautiful shot and sublimely acted. It would have been very easy to ruin these characters with some shoddy acting, but man did Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence pull it off. It's just a great film. My only problem (which isn't a real problem) with the film was that they where all Eagles fans (which as a fan of the Giants is about as bad as it can get), but well we all have our flaws.
