13 / Winters Bone / Debra Granik
A second film in a row starring Jennifer Lawrence. Two films though, which could not be any more different. Winters Bone definitely isn't a nice light uplifting romantic movie. To get an idea of the tone of the film, just look at the poster, that's essentially the palette of the film, It's gritty and dark with very restrained colours, an aesthetic that suits the story perfectly. Winters Bone tells the story of Ree (played by Jennifer Lawrence) and her search for her drug dealer father as she tries to keep her farther together. A part she plays so perfectly, after having seen her in a lot of mainstream hollywood fair lately, it's amazing to see her completely transform into this poor 17 year old girl. Really the whole film rests entirely on her shoulders, if it wasn't for her performance there wouldn't really be much else to see here. Yes, John Hawkes also pulls out all the stops in a really great performance and the cinematography is really beautiful. But the stories a little one dimension and plods a little towards the middle. In the end though the characters are so well performed and the atmosphere so perfectly set, you're left just wanting to soak it all up despite that.
