07 / I Need That Record! / Brendan Toller
When I first started watching I Need That Record! The Death (Or Possible Survival) of the Independent Record Store (to give it it's full name) I have to admit I couldn't help but feel kind of annoyed as the film starts out with a lot of the usual ranting bout how 'Big record labels are evil and corporation sucks and no pop music is good and we should go back to good ole days when everyone baught records blah blah blah' which is a sentiment I'm kind of sick of hearing. I get it record stores are good, experimental music is great, I love it so much and I'm the first one to admit most pop music is good, but I hate that pompous attitude people have towards it. Luckily the film didn't stick to this track, as it progressed it started to evolve into a much more interesting analysis on indie record stores and the people who inhabit and own them. I was also happy to see that when they got to the whole internet side of the debate the film was actually very positive about the effect of the internet on independent music, which made me happy, although the film was made in 2008 so it was a tad dated. In theend though it just made me want to listen to some good old punk rock which is never a bad thing.
