06 / Bombay Beach / Alama Har'el

It feels hard to talk about Bombay Beach without mentioning Beasts of the Southern Wild, a film which I completely adored. Although they'e both very different films (Bombay Beach is a documentary in the end) they both deal with these strange societies form on the fringes, although they deal with them in very different ways. Whereas Beasts.. is all magic and romance and beaty, Bombay Beach is far from that. These people are real people, with real problems that can't be resolved and summed up as easily as they can in fiction. While there is an overall sense of romanticism attached to the film, it definitely doesn't shy away from the darker side of these peoples lives, but whereas it would be very easy for the filmmakers to be very judgemental towards some of these people, but they're not and that makes for a much richer experience. For me though, the most moving moments of the film where the sections where the filmmaker got the people to do these beautiful dances, which while kind of being at odds with the gritty reality of these peoples lives managed to show the hope and exuberance present in these people.
