21 / Mitsuko Delivers / Yûya Ishii

Mitsuko Delivers is a film that quite literally has it's head in the clouds. While watching it I kept waiting for a good film to emerge from the clouds, it felt like it was right there, hiding behind them and occasionally peeking through, but it just couldn't work it's way out. Mitusko Delivers definitely has a lot of heart, there are some really touching moments, but it wears its heart a little too much on its sleeve. It is completely lacking in any form of subtlety and even spends a lot of time literally shouting it's feelings at you. I've felt the need to use literally a lot in writing about Mitusko Delivers, which just goes to show you the kind of film it is. It's shallow, there's not much below the surface. There are a couple of fleeting moments where you can see some semblance of depth, but they're never capitalised on. Instead of delving deeper we're pushed towards the next shouting match or over the top comedic moment.
