The Announcement tells the story of Magic Johnson's retirement from Basketball because of his diagnosis with HIV. I'm not exactly a huge basketball fan, and while I watch it occasionally, I can't say I really new much about the story of Magic Johnson. Obviously this film doesn't focus on the basketball career of Magic, but you get enough of an insight of it to see how much it meant to him and affected his life. For me this film perfectly illustrates the things that I love about sports, It's a tidy narrative where the mess of life can be played out in a satisfying way. The story of Magic is a really powerful and moving one and hearing him tell it directly just makes it hit home even more. He's such a likeable man, that when the film was over I just wanted to spend more time in his presence.
