32 / eXistenZ / David Cronenberg
Yep, another Cronenberg film. Where to start with eXistenZ though? It's a really tough film to pin down. While it's central concept that explores the blurred line between reality of these strange alternate reality video games that exist in the films world is interesting. But the film initially left me feeling like it was lacking something. Sitting here now though, staring at my screen for the last 10 minutes trying to figure out what to write about it, I don't think it was actually lacking anything though. I feel like this is a film I need to see again, knowing how it ends, to be able to write about it in any kind of substantial way. I feel like I spent too much time trying to figure out what was actually going on instead of just letting myself get lost in it. Thinking about it though the fil mysel giving me enough hints to just let myself get lost in it. The one thing that I really love about eXistenZ was the machines. These terrifying fleshy biological machines that only Cronenberg could pull off. They perfectly visualise the key conflict at the heart of this film of reality verses virtual reality. Overall though I feel like I feel like a longer entry about this film will be popping up in the future when I inevitably re-watch it and can make more sense of it.
