30 / How To Murder Your Wife / Richard Quine
How To Murder Your Wife is a cartoonish and farcical affair, which I don't mean in an all together bad way. It is, at times a very fun little film. Unfortunately I just couldn't get over the unbelievable sexual politics of the film. I hate to be that person, I understand it's meant to be a comedy and there are some extremely funny gags that are well set up and shot. But littered between that is some of the most crass unfunny and truly shocking misogyny I've ever seen. I also get that it was the 60's and a very different world. But I was genuinely shocked by some of the stuff that they got away with. I know I'm taking it too seriously. But There's one particular scene at the end of the movie where the main character spends a good 15 minutes explaining to a jury why having a wife is so terrible and it's ok to murder them. Which the film agrees is right! In another situation that could be a funny scene, but it felt like the film actually believed he was right, because you know, those bloody women sure are a pain in the ass! I get that the film could be read as a satire, and if I believed it was I probably be be fine with it all, but the whole thing seemed way to real to be satirical. There seems to be general hatred and bad feelings behind this film. And it might just be me misinterpreting it all, but in the end it just seemed to be completely lacking any kind of heart.
