27 / A League of Their Own / Penny Marshall

I've always been fascinate by the game of baseball, there's something so romantic about it. There's also something about the drama and narrative of baseball that lends itself to the medium of film better than any other sport and A League of Their Own is an example of a baseball film done absolutely perfectly. It tells the story of a woman's baseball team during world war two, when the woman's league became a phenomenon with all the male players being sent of to war. It has everything you could want from a sports movie. Tales of family, friendship, love and redemption. All the juicy stuff from life. All the stuff sports make a great conduit for. It's so refreshing to see a film like this feature women. Strong and powerful women who are put at centre stage and made real with excellent writing and even better performances. I feel like it shouldn't be a thing that's worth pointing out, but in Hollywood that really is a rarity. Overall though despite the polotics, A League of Their Own is a beautiful and emotional film with it's heart in exactly the right place.
