19 / Shivers / David Cronenberg

"If this picture doesn't make you scream and squirm you better see a psychiatrist, quick!"

Shivers is a strange little film. It's Cronenberg's first feature film and has all the strange flesh obsession and great low budget effects of his early body shock films. Shivers is obviously a much less polished film than, say Videodrome or Scanners, but then it was made on a tiny budget in 15 days. A feet I can't help but admire. While there are moments when the low budget-ness of the film does get a bit distracting, especially as a good portion of the actors had never really acted before so some of the performances are lacking, but it's a genre film. You're not expecting great performances, you're expecting scares and gore and there's plenty of that. So while it's far from being Cronenberg's best, it's a really fun film, that has some great moments and, like all good genre films, definitely has some interesting ideas behind it.
